How to bake a 6 inch cake
Baking a cake is a fun and rewarding activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you’re baking a cake for a special occasion or just for fun, there’s nothing quite like the smell of a fresh cake baking in the oven. In this post we’re going to tell you exactly how to bake a 6 inch cake.
It can also be a way to make extra income, making cakes for events and birthdays can bring in a healthy side hustle income or even turn into a full time profession.
In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the steps to make your own delicious cake from scratch in this full proof recipe.
Firstly lets get the ingredients together and I would highly recommend getting these out ahead of making your cake, especially the butter as it will be softer and easier to work with.
Ingredients:
250g Self-raising flour
250g Caster sugar
250g Baking butter
4 Large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Equipment:
Stand Mixer
Spatula
6″ cake tin
Greaseproof paper
Toothpick
Clingfilm
A boiled kettle
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celsius (350 degrees fahrenheit or gas mark 4)
Using your stand mixer put all of the ingredients into the bowl and mix. Scrape the sides of the bowl a couple of times to ensure everything is well mixed together.
Pour the batter into a lined (with greaseproof paper) and greased 6” cake tin.
Bake the cake for 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove the cake from the oven and remove from the cake tin immediately. Wrap fully in cling film and leave to cool completely on a wire rack.
Once the cake has cooled, you can decorate it however you like. Buttercream, whipped cream, or fresh fruit are all great options.
If you want to make taller cakes you can bake many of these 6 inch cakes and stack them on top of each other, remembering to add a delicious filling between the layers. My favourite is jam and buttercream but you can put anything you want between the layers.
Tips for a 6 inch cake:
Make sure your butter is at room temperature before using it. This will help ensure that the batter is smooth and well-combined.
Don’t overmix the batter once all of the ingredients are combined. Overmixing can cause the cake to become tough and dry. (Nigella Lawson says 2-3 minutes should be more than enough time to mix a smooth batter but not “overmix” it.)
If you’re using a non-stick cake pan, you may not need to line the tin. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to be sure. I like to use a removeable bottom cake tin to make it easier to remove the cake from the tin.
Add a small amount of boiling water to your cake batter ( no more than 20ml ) this make the cake batter fluffy and light. Add this towards the end of the mixing process.
In conclusion, baking a cake from scratch is a fun and easy activity that can be enjoyed by anyone. With a few simple ingredients and some basic kitchen tools, you can create a delicious cake that will impress your friends and family.
